FTC Settles With Sites That Broke Child Privacy Law
The Federal Trade Commission is celebrating the first anniversary of a law designed to protect children's privacy by cracking down on three companies that collected information about minors without parental consent. The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which went into effect April 21, 2000, requires sites that collect information from children to get parental permission first--sometimes via phone, mail or fax.
