Upheaval at Bertelsmann May End Plans for Acquisition of Napster
Thomas Middelhoff's ouster from Bertelsmann may be a crippling blow for Napster, the music service that Mr. Middelhoff championed. People involved in negotiations to revive Napster said Bertelsmann may now be less inclined to purchase the service from bankruptcy or to spend tens of millions of dollars to settle copyright infringement lawsuits brought by the major record companies and obtain licenses from them to sell their music online.
