Rice's Genetic Map May Help Build a Better Cereal
Competing public and private research groups released remarkably complete drafts of the genetic sequence of rice Thursday, unlocking hereditary secrets of the plant that feeds half the world. In a move that drew sharp criticism from geneticists around the world, Syngenta executives decided to keep the company's rice genetic sequence in a proprietary company database, placing restrictions on its use. Monsanto has also limited access to its rice data.
